Maria MercadoMaria Mercado:
"I am physically and mentally able to give
100 percent. I was with the Farm Workers of Cesar Chavez."

Ms. Mercado, apprentice carpenter with Hensel Phelps, the general contractor, is the sole supporter of her five children, aged seven through 17.

"This is the opportunity I have been looking for -- to come to a job that would have a fair day's pay for a fair day's work. And benefits. I understand what the benefits of a union are because I had worked for a union when I worked out in the fields. I'm not afraid of hard work. And I am more than willing to be the type of employee the company can be proud of. What will my feeling be when I move back in? It's almost like a dream that will become a reality, that you see it but can't believe it. Even though I know I was paid to work, the satisfaction is so immense, knowing that I was part of the crew that helped build the community back. And this is a positive example for the children... that where there is a desire and a will, there is a way. We've set an example for the young people -- to go forward and do what you need to achieve your dream"

Carlos MontoyaCarlos Montoya:
"I am willing to be molded. I say, 'Show me what you would like me to do and I am willing to accommodate.'"

Mr. Montoya is an apprentice carpenter with Laurence Hovenier. He is 25 and supports his mother who lives with him.

"This is my dream, I have always wanted to be an apprentice, a carpenter and work my way up to a foreman. But you can only do that in the proper manner if you're in a union, right? I picked carpentry because it's in my blood. I've done this work before, but not in a union status. It was this unique opportunity and I would not let this go by... I'm going to classes on Saturday to upgrade my skills. I was given the opportunity I was waiting for... Maybe in a few years, I want to buy me a house. I want to thank Ms. Jurado, she opened the door for us."

Stella Jurado, speaks highly of Carlos, "Mr. Montoya is smiling here, because this young man has such a positive attitude towards this job, it's almost unbelievable that somebody can work out here in 100 degree weather then come in with a smile on his face. I think you hear it in his voice, the sound that the words are spoken, and you can't write that down in words."
